Part of Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana, the city was founded as Richland in 1869 by Alfred Chapman and Andrew Glassell, who received the land as payment for legal fees.
It is in southern California, along the coast of the Pacific Ocean. Its county seat is Santa Ana, and its largest city is Irvine. The county has 3,186,989 people, as of 2020, spread across just 948 square miles (2,455 square kilometers). It is the third most populous county in California.
