Saint Petersburg State University is a public research university in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Founded in 1724 by a decree of Peter the Great, the university from the beginning has had a focus on fundamental research in science, engineering and humanities.

Establishment of St Petersburg University. In January 1724, the decree signed by Peter the Great established the Academy with University and Gymnasium as its part which trained future specialists for the Academy. That’s when the history of the university education in Russia started. It was the era of the Academic University.
