When referring to the chat provider by name instead of the generic chat in general, perhaps we can use over similarly to how we can say over the phone; we're imagining the chat provider as sending our messages across, or over, their network. At any rate, the above is just speculation as to why these usages are prevalent.

24 lug 2015 · Yes I agree. chat is emphatically, unequivocally, two-way, and as such, uses "with". Once, long ago, one might say "I chatted him up, which uses neither "to" nor "with", but that usage is an idiom. We had a chat (while) drinking a cup of coffee. This describes two activities taking place at the same time. We had a chat over a cup of coffee. This expresses the coffee as the context in which the chat took place. You might think of the coffee as the foundation ("underneath") of the chat, hence, the chat is described as being "over" the coffee.

It should be "in the chat", but "in chat" is sometimes in the case below. The "the" is because the phase considers "chat" an object, and therefore an article is required.
