Uppingham School is a public school (English fee-charging boarding and day school for pupils 13-18) in Uppingham, Rutland, England, founded in 1584 by Robert Johnson, the Archdeacon of Leicester, who also established Oakham School.
Uppingham is one of the UK’s leading boarding schools for boys and girls aged 13-18, drawing around 790 pupils from all over the country and abroad. Located in the rural setting of a small market town in Rutland, Uppingham’s distinctive architecture testifies a history that began in 1584.
Uppingham School is a boarding school by philosophy. Its celebrated former Head, Edward Thring, believed that a sense of self-esteem is built by engaging students in things they enjoy doing, and that the best way to provide a rich, full and all-round education is to be a boarding school.
There is no provision for weekly or flexi-boarding at Uppingham. Children may also apply to join us as day pupils . Day pupil applications can be made for Fourth Form, Lower Fifth and Lower Sixth entry, following the standard application processes.
