The emergence in the mid 1970s of the topic of biopolitics in Foucault’s work fits with his broader theoretical and historical analysis of social power and power rela- tions.
Foucault deploys the concept of government or "governmentality" as a "guideline" for the analysis he offers by way of historical reconstructions embracing a period starting from Ancient Greek through to modern neo-liberalism (Foucault 1978b, 719).
