Lippe (later Lippe-Detmold and then again Lippe) was a state in Germany, ruled by the House of Lippe. It was located between the Weser river and the southeast part of the Teutoburg Forest. It originated as a state during the Holy Roman Empire, and was promoted to the status of principality in 1789.

Lippe (German pronunciation:) is a Kreis in the east of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Neighboring districts are Herford, Minden-Lübbecke, Höxter, Paderborn, Gütersloh, and district-free Bielefeld, which forms the region Ostwestfalen-Lippe.
Der Kreis steht in der Tradition des ehemaligen Landes Lippe, das 1947 Nordrhein-Westfalen beitrat und seither (neben nördlichem Rheinland und Westfalen) dessen dritten Landesteil bildet. Symbolisiert wird diese Stellung durch die Lippische Rose im Wappen Nordrhein-Westfalens.
