The New Palace (German: Neues Palais) is a palace situated on the western side of the Sanssouci park in Potsdam, Germany. The building was begun in 1763, after the end of the Seven Years' War , under King Friedrich II ( Frederick the Great ) and was completed in 1769.
New Palace – Germany’s largest baroque palace. The New Palace was commissioned by King Frederick in the first half of the 1750s. The building plans were drawn up by Büring and Manger on the basis of sketches by King Frederick. Originally, the palace was to be built on the southern axis of Sanssouci Palace on the Havel.
The Neues Palais, or New Palace, a grand residence on the large Sanssouci Park of Frederick II of Prussia (1712-1786), was commissioned at the end of the Seven Years’ War to advertise the strength of Prussia’s finances, despite the years of battle.

The design of the “New Palace” was intended to show that Prussia’s capabilities had not diminished despite the recent defeat in the Seven Years’ War. The creation of the “New Palace” evoked associations with the French Versailles, and Sanssouci was assigned the role of a trianon.
The New Palace was erected in the western part of Park Sanssouci between 1763 and 1769. Frederick’s New Palace marks the symbolic end of an era, since after its completion no further baroque palaces were built in Prussia.
Located at the end of the main avenue in Park Sanssouci, the New Palace is visible throughout the entire park and its high tambour dome is recognisable from afar. It was built between 1763 and 1769, making it the last palace to be built by Frederick the Great in Sanssouci Park.
