The Royal Proclamation of 1763 was issued after the British defeated the French at Québec City in 1759 and Montreal in 1760 ( see Battle of the Plains of Abraham and Seven Years’ War ). After those defeats, New France (1608-1763) was taken over by the British.

The Royal Proclamation of 1763 was issued by King George III on 7 October 1763. It followed the Treaty of Paris (1763), which formally ended the Seven Years' War and transferred French territory in North America to Great Britain.

It established a British-administered reservation from west of the Appalachians and south of Hudson Bay to the Floridas and ordered white settlers to withdraw.
The Proclamation of 1763 prohibited British colonists from settling west of the Appalachian Mountains. The proclamation was intended partly to help Britain control its new lands. However, it was especially notable for acknowledging the rights of the Indigenous peoples who already occupied the territory.
