Customers read it and decide to buy or not to buy the book. BOOK's OBI appeared around 1930 in Japan, and around 1960, Japanese Record-Labels started to add OBI-STRIPS also to vinyl-records.

For certain releases they can cause a significant price increase. An obi is standard for Japanese releases, and any listing should state "no obi" if that's the case. To me, yes, a Japanese item is complete without an OBI. I treat it like a sticker. If it's there, I mention it, if it's not, I don't.
