Kubrat (Greek: Κοβρᾶτος, Kούβρατος; Bulgarian: Кубрат) was the ruler of the Onogur–Bulgars, credited with establishing the confederation of Old Great Bulgaria in ca. 632. His name derived from the Turkic words qobrat — "to gather", or qurt, i.e. "wolf".
Kubràt fu un sovrano dalla famiglia Dulo, capo della tribù degli Unogonduri, che unì i proto-bulgari al nord del Caucaso e del Mar Nero per realizzare una potente unione tribale chiamata Grande Bulgaria e conosciuta anche come Onoguria.
Kubrat (o Kurt o Houvrat) fu membro del clan Dulo e l'erede al trono bulgaro. Passò la sua adolescenza nell'Impero bizantino, dove venne educato e battezzato, mentre il suo zio materno Organa era il reggente della sua tribù.
