Outward Bound is an innovative educational concept developed by Kurt Hahn, a celebrated and progressive German educator, which has now flourished for over eighty years. (IP/VC) The birth of today’s Outward Bound began humbly with the opening of Gordonstoun school in Scotland in the 1930’s with only two students.
Read more. Gordonstoun is also the birthplace of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards, the Outward Bound movement, and was one of the first boarding schools to admit girls alongside boys. The school then had some of the first female firefighters in the UK. Gordonstoun was founded in 1934 by German educationalist Dr Kurt Hahn.
Outward bound. Gordonstoun temporarily relocated to Aberdyfi, Wales during World War II, while the British Army used the Gordonstoun estate as barracks. Hahn worked with friends and fellow educationalist, Lawrence Durning Holt and Jim Hogan.

Kurt Matthias Robert Martin Hahn CBE [1] (5 June 1886 – 14 December 1974) was a German educator. He was decisive in founding Stiftung Louisenlund, Schule Schloss Salem, Gordonstoun, Outward Bound, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, and the first of the United World Colleges, Atlantic College .
