The painter Michael Upton epitomised, for many of his contemporaries, the essence of Sixties cool. Good-looking, enigmatic, gregarious, he cut a louche, dashing figure in a monochromatic London throwing off the shackles of Fifties restraint.
7 mar 2021 · One of Britain’s most famous pop artists of the sixties is being remembered with a special exhibition of his Cornwall’s landscape work. The late Michael Upton was one of the most progressive and radical of the 1960's pop artists, working alongside David Hockney and John Hoyland.
Michael Upton (1938–2002) Painter, performance artist and teacher, born in Birmingham. He attended the College of Art there, 1954–8, then the Royal Academy Schools, 1958–62. From 1971 he was a visiting tutor and external assessor in painting at various art colleges as well as being a teacher at Royal Academy Schools.
