Remaining in France as captain of one of the notorious ‘Free Companies’ after the English victory at Poitiers in 1356, Knolles and his band of 500 archers practised systematic extortion and terrorism on the civil population of the Loire Valley and Normandy and made a fortune of 100,000 crowns.
Sir Robert Knolles (both: nōlz), d. 1407, English military commander in the Hundred Years War. He became a leader of a company of mercenaries, fought against Bertrand Du Guesclin, whom he captured in 1359, and assisted Edward the Black Prince in his Spanish campaign, especially at Nájera (1367).
