L'amiral de France a la charge des côtes de Picardie, de Normandie, d' Aunis et de Saintonge. Sa charge va s'étendre au début du XVIIe siècle, à la Guyenne puis à la Provence. En temps de guerre, il est chargé de rassembler les navires marchands français pour constituer la flotte.

Amiral de France n’est pas un grade. C’est une dignité tout comme maréchal de France. Le premier amiral de France connu fut Florent de Varennes, fait amiral par Louis IX en 1270 [2]. Cette dignité n’a plus été conférée depuis 1869. Le dernier amiral de France fut l’amiral François Thomas Tréhouart (1798-1873).
