The Grand Ducal Burial Vault (Russian: Великокняжеская усыпальница) is the purpose-built mausoleum of the Grand Dukes and Duchesses of Russia in the Peter and Paul Fortress. The Neo-Baroque domed structure is frequently mistaken for a part of the Peter and Paul Cathedral due to architectural similarities.
It features the “Sagrestia Nuova”, whose architecture and sculptures are by Michelangelo Buonarroti, the “Cappella dei Principi”, a monumental grand ducal mausoleum, and the crypts below. The burial place of the Medici family, the Cappelle Medicee (Medici Chapels) are today a national monument and museum.

The Ducal Vault – a masterpiece of Classical period architecture in Thuringia – was built at the behest of Grand Duke Carl August between 1823 and 1828 on the grounds of the Historic Cemetery, established in 1818. Its architect was Clemens Wenzeslaus Coudray.

The Grand Ducal Mausoleum was designed by architect David Grimm and constructed 1897-1908. The Mausoleum was built to hold 60 tombs, but by 1916 there were only 13 people buried, and eight of them had been moved from the cathedral.
