St Mary’s School opened with just 19 pupils under the Headship of Sister Veronica Lund (1885-91). The earliest buildings remain at the heart of the school, including the Chapel, which was consecrated in 1906, and the layout of the estate included the rhododendrons and azaleas which still greet visitors as they come up the drive.

Mary Ward died near York in January 1645 having failed to get her Institute recognised and confirmed by Rome. This confirmation was not given until 1877 just a few years before Reverend Mother Joseph Edwards founded St Mary's in Ascot. History - St Mary's School Ascot. History is taught to all girls in Years 7, 8 and 9. It is then an option at both IGCSE and A Level. In Years 7 to 9, the girls follow a course in British history starting in 1066 and finishing in 1945. In Year 7 they learn about medieval life in villages and castles, and also complete a unit on Imperial China.
