From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The Central Hessian dialect is a German dialect subgroup of the Hessian branch of Central German. [1] [2] It has only partly undergone the High German (HG) consonant shift but has had a different vowel development than most other German dialects.
Hessian ( German: Hessisch) is a West Central German group of dialects of the German language in the central German state of Hesse. The dialect most similar to Hessian is Palatinate German ( German: Pfälzisch) of the Rhine Franconian sub-family.
Three different languages or dialect groups are spoken in Hesse: The Far North is part of the Low Saxon language area, divided into a tiny Eastphalian and a larger Westphalian dialect area. Most of Hesse belongs to the West Middle German dialect zone.
