He succeeded the throne after Catherine I, Peter I’s second wife, in 1727 and was Emperor of Russia until his death of smallpox. After Catherine I’s death, her daughter Elizabeth Petrovna, the future Empress of Russia, inherited Tsarskoe Selo and expanded the palace and park.
