Edward the Martyr (c. 962 – 18 March 978) was King of the English from 8 July 975 until he was killed in 978. He was the eldest son of King Edgar (r. 959–975).

Edward the Martyr (16 February 962 — 18 March 978) known in the Catholic Church, Church of England, Eastern Orthodox Church, and Anglican Communion as Saint Edward the Passion-Bearer and nicknamed the Saint, the Religious, the Pious, and the Wise was the King of England from 975 until he was murdered in 978.
Edward the Confessor (c. 1003 – 5 January 1066) was an Anglo-Saxon English king and saint. Usually considered the last king of the House of Wessex, he ruled from 1042 until his death in 1066. Edward was the son of Æthelred the Unready and Emma of Normandy. He succeeded Cnut the Great's son – and his own half-brother – Harthacnut.
On 18th March 978 a tragic incident occurred: a young King of England was slain at Corfe Castle, having only served as king for a short three years, from 975 until his early demise in 978, when he became known as Edward the Martyr.
Edward the Elder (870s? – 17 July 924) was King of the Anglo-Saxons from 899 until his death in 924. He was the elder son of Alfred the Great and his wife Ealhswith.
After his death the throne was disputed between the supporters of his two surviving sons; the elder one, Edward the Martyr, was chosen with the support of Dunstan, the Archbishop of Canterbury. Three years later Edward was murdered and succeeded by his younger half-brother, Æthelred the Unready.
