Irving Babbitt was an American critic and teacher, leader of the movement in literary criticism known as the “New Humanism,” or Neohumanism. Babbitt was educated at Harvard University and at the Sorbonne in Paris and taught French and comparative literature at Harvard from 1894 until his death.

He criticized the scientific and sentimental humanisms that threatened the survival of humane learning and the ethical formation of the individual.
Abstract. This chapter surveys Irving Babbitt’s writings in defense of the classical and modern humanities. It demonstrates that Babbitt’s critique of the American research university and its philosophical underpinnings provides a more satisfying intellectual foundation for the humanities than do typical contemporary defenses.
