The County of Lippe (German: Grafschaft Lippe) or Lippe-Detmold was an Imperial Estate of the Holy Roman Empire. It had its origins in a small lordship on the Lippe river, first attested in 1123, and lands leased from the Bishopric of Paderborn from 1173.
The House of Lippe (German: Haus Lippe) is the former reigning house of a number of small German states, two of which existed until the German Revolution of 1918–19, the Principality of Lippe and the Principality of Schaumburg-Lippe.
The County of Lippe-Brake was reunited with the main Detmold line in 1709. A son of Simon VII, Jobst Herman, founded another branch of the family, the Lippe-Biesterfeld line; the Lippe-Weissenfeld branch later separated from the Lippe-Biesterfelds.
The House of Lippe descends from Jobst Herman, Count of Lippe (died ca. 1056) whose son Bernhard I was the founder of the state of Lippe in 1123. In 1613, the House's territory was split into Lippe-Detmold, Lippe-Brake and Lippe-Alverdissen.
