LEOPOLDO I principe di Anhalt-Dessau, detto il vecchio Dessauer Walter Holtzmann Nacque il 3 luglio 1675, dal principe Giovanni Giorgio II (morto nel 1693) e da una principessa della casa d'Orange.
Figlio (Dessau 1676 - ivi 1747) del principe Giovanni Giorgio II, entrò nel servizio militare prussiano. Si legò di stretta amicizia con Eugenio di Savoia in occasione di un suo viaggio in Italia; nel 1698 assunse il governo dell'Anhalt.
Anhalt-Dessau. L' Anhalt-Dessau fu un principato e quindi un ducato tedesco, situato nel territorio dell'ex Repubblica Democratica Tedesca, dal 1382 al 1863, anno in cui entrò a far parte del Ducato di Anhalt . Nel 1396 il Principato diviene eredità del Principato di Anhalt-Zerbst, compreso nell' Anhalt-Köthen e nell'Anhalt-Dessau.
