In 1927, Tagore composed Natir Puja, where dance was incorporated but not privileged over songs. It was a grand success. Natir Puja was later produced into a film in 1932, with a young crew: it being the only film that Tagore ever graced.
Natir Puja is based on historical facts and legends about Raja Bimbisara a contemporary of the Buddha and a follower of Buddhist ideology. Sensing his son Ajatashatru's craving for kingdom, Bimbisara had given up his throne to his son Ajatashatru, while Chitra, another son, had followed his father's path to become a Bhikshu.
