To the south of the village is Newburgh Priory, a Grade I listed stately home built on the site of a former Augustinian priory. The original priory was built in 1145 by Roger De Mowbray but fell victim to the Dissolution of the Monasteries instigated by King Henry VIII.
Newburgh Priory was the site of an Augustinian Priory which was founded in 1145 and granted licence to enclose a park in 1383. It was acquired by Anthony Bellasis after the Dissolution and continued in the family, who were created viscounts and then earls of Fauconberg.
8 dic 2023 · The priory of Newburgh was peopled from Bridlington, and the canons who came for that purpose at first settled at Hood, which had been vacated by the monks of Byland. This latter grant of Roger de Mowbray would seem to have been made to the canons while settled at Hood, and before they moved to Newburgh, when Hood became a cell of that house.
