Ingegnere del re (1655), prese parte (1655-59) in Fiandra alla guerra tra Francia e Inghilterra contro la Spagna: durante la guerra di devoluzione diresse gli assedi di Tournai, Douai, Lilla, Dôle. Louvois e Colbert lo incaricarono di ricostruire tutto il sistema fortificato francese.
