L’inizio: un fantasma sulle mura della città
L’inizio della tragedia è affidato a due soldati, testimoni dell’apparizione di un fantasma sulle torri che cingono la città di Elsinora, capitale della Danimarca. Ad assistere al ritorno del defunto re (almeno questi pare essere) arriva anche Orazio, amico del principe erede Amleto, che cerca in tutti i modi di far parlare il fantasma. Ma, quando questi è sul punto di farlo, il gallo canta e il fantasma sparisce.
Il consiglio reale per fermare l’invasione di Fortebraccio
Intanto, in consiglio, re Claudio, la regina Gertrude, il figlio Amleto, il ciambellano Polonio, il figlio Laerte, gli ambasciatori Cornelio e Voltimando stanno affrontando la questione del figlio di Fortebraccio. Pare che egli stia riunendo un’armata ai confini con la Norvegia per riconquistare i territori persi dal padre. L’assise decide di mandare due ambasciatori dal re di Norvegia per convincerlo a dissuadere il nipote da una tale azione.
Il re e il principe: la consegna della missione
Orazio confessa ad Amleto che il fantasma che appare sulle torri, gli sembra essere il suo defunto padre. Amleto, quindi, si reca sul posto a mezzanotte e, infatti, riconosce e incontra lo spirito del defunto genitore. Questi gli rivela che lo zio, per brama di potere e di possesso verso il regno e la regina, l’ha ucciso versandogli un veleno nell’orecchio mentre dormiva in giardino.
