6 ott 2020 · In the present study, countries must be democratic in order to qualify as semi-constitutional monarchies. Countries that meet the criteria of democracy with a monarch as a head of state are consequently either constitutional monarchies or semi-constitutional monarchies. The crucial question is to draw a line between the two categories.

Abstract: Constitutional monarchies are commonly seen as anachronisms, vestiges that are doomed to disappear. Yet one in five countries today is a constitutional monarchy. This paper provides a definition and typology of constitutional monarchy, and explains why constitutional monarchy may be stable in a world in which most countries are republics.

Contemporary Politics. ABSTRACT The issue of executive power sharing in democratic countries with a monarch as head of state has received little scholarly attention.
Building on earlier work by Congleton (2011), who introduced the king as an explicit player in the democratic transition, the present work considers constitutional monarchy as a form of power sharing between the king and a liberal challenger to royal authority. The king and the liberal coexist over a succession of discrete peri-ods.
Constitutional monarchies are found in parts of Western Europe (e.g. in Belgium, the Netherlands and Sweden), in Japan and Malaysia, and formerly in Nepal. Quasi-constitutional monarchies can also be found in some Arab states, although often these fall short of genuinely democratic practice.
