Sonoma ( / səˈnoʊmə /) is a city in Sonoma County, California, United States, located in the North Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area. Sonoma is one of the principal cities of California's Wine Country and the center of the Sonoma Valley AVA.
It is the northernmost county in the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area region. In California's Wine Country region, which also includes Napa, Mendocino, and Lake counties, Sonoma County is the largest producer. It has nineteen approved American Viticultural Areas and more than 350 wineries.
The town of Sonoma is located 45 miles north of San Francisco in the heart of the California wine country. It is the gateway to the scenic 17-mile Sonoma Valley which is cradled between the Mayacamas and the Sonoma Mountain ranges.
