7 feb 2006 · Rouyn-Noranda, Qué, City, pop 28 270 (2001c), 30 936 A (1996c), 28 958 (1991c), area 348.07 km 2, inc 1986, is the largest centre in the Abitibi-Témiscaming region and its administrative capital. The city was formed from the amalgamation of 2 municipalities in 1986, both of which were established after the discovery of COPPER and GOLD deposits at the Noranda mine in the mid-1920s.
Nestled next to the lake, Noranda—with its diversity, creativity and championship medals—is pure emotion set against the backdrop of the mine. Rouyn emerged from the chaos of the prospectors who squatted* on the land, drilling their mine shafts* everywhere. It’s a city of merchants who settled there to attract the miners from across the lake.
