Am 21. November 1822 heiratete Prinzessin Amalie Auguste in Dresden Prinz Johann von Sachsen, Sohn von Prinz Maximilian von Sachsen und der Prinzessin Caroline von Bourbon-Parma. Er war der jüngere Bruder des sächsischen Königs Friedrich August II. und wurde am 9. August 1854 dessen Nachfolger. Aus der Ehe gingen neun Kinder hervor:
Princess Augusta of Bavaria, Duchess of Leuchtenberg ( German: Augusta Amalia Ludovika Georgia von Bayern) ( Strasbourg, 21 June 1788 – Munich, 13 May 1851) was the second child and eldest daughter of Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria and Princess Augusta Wilhelmina of Hesse-Darmstadt. By marriage, she was a French princess.
She was a member of the House of Württemberg, Duchess of Urach and Countess of Württemberg through her marriage to Wilhelm, 2nd Duke of Urach, the future King-elect of Lithuania.  She was called by the French version of her name, Amélie, and was lifelong friends with her cousin, Archduchess Marie Valerie of Austria .
