John Dark (7 April 1927 – 29 June 2015) was a British film and television producer. Dark produced Half a Sixpence in 1967 and a series of Edgar Rice Burroughs films, including The Land That Time Forgot and At the Earth's Core, in the 1970s.
Dark Star è un film di fantascienza statunitense del 1974 diretto da John Carpenter, suo esordio alla regia di un lungometraggio. Il film riprende molti elementi del celebre 2001: Odissea nello spazio di Stanley Kubrick, in senso surreale e parodistico.

Origini e formazione
Nato a Carthage, nello stato di New York, Carpenter cresce a Bowling Green (Kentucky). Si diploma alla Western Kentucky University, dove il padre insegna musica. La sua carriera nel cinema inizia con una serie di cortometraggi come Revenge of the Colossal Beasts, in cui compaiono già alcuni dei temi tipicamente "carpenteriani". Nel 1968 si iscrive alla University of Southern California, ma dopo 4 anni abbandona gli studi senza riuscire a laurearsi.
Le prime opere
Nel 1970 cura la sceneggiatura (insieme a Nick Castle, Trace Johnston, John Longenecker e James R. Rokos), il montaggio e le musiche del cortometraggio The Resurrection of Broncho Billy (regia di James R. Rokos), una testimonianza dell'amore che Carpenter nutre per il cinema western. La storia è quella di un ragazzo che, inadatto ad affrontare la realtà, si trasforma in un cowboy. Dopo The Resurrection of Broncho Billy, Carpenter si mette al lavoro - insieme all'amico Dan O'Bannon (regista di Il ritorno dei morti viventi e sceneggiatore di Alien) - su un'opera che, attraverso una chiave di lettura parodistica, unisca le tematiche di 2001: Odissea nello spazio e Il dottor Stranamore.
