Ravi S. Rajan is an American artist and academic administrator working as the fourth president of the California Institute of the Arts.
Ravi Rajan is a scholar, educator, and activist in environmental history, theory, and policy. He is the Olga T. Griswold Chair and Professor of Environmental Studies at UC Santa Cruz, and has also served as a senior fellow, visiting professor, and board member of various academic and civil society institutions.
After an 18-month search which included over 500 candidates, Board Chair Tim Disney and the CalArts board of trustees announced on December 13, 2016, that Ravi S. Rajan, then the dean of the School of the Arts at the State University of New York at Purchase, was unanimously selected as president, to begin in June 2017.
Ravi’s research spans environmental history, theory, and policy. It is particularly focused on the political economy of environment – development conflicts; environmental human rights and environmental justice; and environmental risks and disasters.
Ravi Rajan is a professor of environmental studies and a former president of Pesticide Action Network. He has a PhD from Oxford and post-doctoral training from Max Planck Institute and UC Berkeley.
