As dukes of Holstein and Schleswig, the rulers of both houses bore the formal title of "Duke of Schleswig, Holstein, Dithmarschen and Stormarn". The dynastic name Holstein-Gottorp comes as convenient usage from the technically more correct Duke of Schleswig and Holstein at Gottorp.

He was the third son of King Frederick I of Denmark and his second wife, Sophie of Pomerania .

28 lug 2019 · Duke Adolf got the Gottorp estate and from then he and his descendants called themselves Dukes of Holstein-Gottorp. Duke Adolf's brother, Hans the Elder, died in 1580 without heirs. He had ruled Haderslev and Tønder, Femern and Rendsburg. His possessions were called the "hansborgske" part after the castle he built in Haderslev.
