A sua vitória nas presidenciais de 1976, com uma derrota clara de Otelo Saraiva de Carvalho (16,5%) e do projeto revolucionário que este corporizava, foi uma legitimarão do fim do PREC (Processo Revolucionário em Curso), meses antes, já militarmente derrotado.
