Philippine "Pina" Bausch (27 July 1940 – 30 June 2009) was a German dancer and choreographer who was a significant contributor to a neo-expressionist dance tradition now known as Tanztheater.

By the time of her death, in 2009, she had created over 50 works and achieved world recognition for her art. Despite criticism at the start, she succeeded in establishing dance theatre as a new genre, influencing the development of dance internationally.
In 1968, the year of the student revolts, the dancer and choreographer Pina Bausch (1940–2009) begins to create her own pieces. When she is appointed as the director of the Wuppertal Ballet in 1973, she renames it “Tanztheater Wuppertal”.
