I compare the film with 8mm a lot because it feels like an exploration of what is the "niche" content that people are invested it, and a Serbian film expertly digressed what niche interest can look like.
Salo is the shock art that people pretend a serbian film is. I feel like the only person who will defend a Serbian film by admitting that it is purely shock for shock’s sake. Salo feels like it explores relationships of power more than it feels like a shock movie. The things that happen in the movie are shocking.

A Serbian Film is all about shock horror and driving the literal metaphor as far out as possible without really having all that much depth to it in the end. Irreversible will teach you some shit about destruction of the human soul and ego driven revenge.

14 feb 2024 · A Serbian Film is an attempt by inexperienced artists to do something similar as an indictment of the rise of fascism in Serbia, but without any of the actual talent or subtlety of Pasolini. Salo paved the way for films like Cannibal Holocaust and the entire generation of extreme horror films that came after.
5 apr 2013 · Apparently it's supposed to be an allegory representative of the way the government in Serbia fucks the people of the nation. But the film does a terrible job conveying that message. It's just a film lacking in any substance really. Just a giant goar fest banking on over the top shock value, degeneracy and depravity. 1.
26 ott 2023 · I watched A Serbian Film (R rated cut) Movie Review. I was fully prepared. I watched it bc I fell down a rabbit hole for a couple days after seeing the movie talked about on this sub. I think the thing that sparked it was the talk of the baby scene. I was so horrified and like “no fucking way this is allowed to be distributed.”.
24 dic 2023 · I also just like the shitstorm it causes whenever someone shows support for it, even (or especially) in the extreme cinema crowd. A Serbian Film was one of the first disturbing movies I ever watched. It was quite a while ago so my memory is quite hazy on it, but certain scenes have stuck in my mind.
