6 nov 2023 · I think this "system player" is giving him too much credit. Kagawa, Mkhitaryan, Mata, etc were system players. Donny is just bad. I said it before we signed him. All that he was getting praised for was an incredible amount of reaching. De Jong absolutely carried the midfield so he had an easy out. Just pass the ball to him.

The fallacy in this argument is that the Ajax crew, if all reunited, would necessarily reproduce the form of 5 seasons ago. They might, but these are all different players now. Take Donny Van De Beek...he's now not even a shadow of the footballer he was at Ajax. Nor De Ligt. Maybe ETH could turn all that around, but it seems unlikely.

For eg, Donny Van de Beek was on course to becoming a great player for us but a pelvis injury kept him out for a full 7 days right after he signed for us and he was never the same player again. We can only guess what miracle would have happened if he wasn't out for that week?
