Keele University is a public research university in Keele, approximately three miles (five kilometres) from Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, England. Founded in 1949 as the University College of North Staffordshire, it was granted university status by Royal Charter as the University of Keele in 1962.

Keele was the first Higher Education institution to be established after the Second World War in the United Kingdom, gaining degree-awarding powers in 1949. Its founders espoused radical educational principles and the University was created to promote interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary scholarship.
The land was earmarked for the development of the new University College of North Staffordshire, which was founded in 1949, opened in 1950 and received its royal charter as Keele University in 1962.
