Patrick Hepburn, 3rd Earl of Bothwell (1512 – September 1556) was the son of Adam Hepburn, Lord Hailes, who died at the Battle of Flodden the year after Patrick's birth. Hepburn was known as the Fair Earl.

It was first created for Patrick Hepburn in 1488, and was forfeited in 1567. Subsequently, the earldom was re-created for the 4th Earl's nephew and heir of line, Francis Stewart, whose father was an illegitimate son of James V.
PATRICK HEPBURN, third Lord Hales and first Earl of Bothwell, raised the family to a position in the foremost rank of the great barons of Scotland.

Patrick Hepburn 3 rd Earl of Bothwell. He was a child when his father died and his tutor has already been mentioned above. On 26 th April 1531 he was appointed a Lord of the Articles but in December of that years he entered into treasonable correspondence with Henry VIII which upon being discovered he was imprisoned in Edinburgh castle.
