Sir Thomas Gladstone. Profile & Legacies Summary. 1804 - 1889. Biography. Eldest son of John Gladstone (q.v.) and older brother of the Liberal prime minister William Gladstone. His father's Liverpool based firm was heavily involved in the West Indian trade. Upon his father's death Thomas inherited his Baronetcy and the family estate.
Thomas Steuart Gladstone was the eldest son of Liverpool merchant and plantation owner Robert Gladstone and Catherine Steuart. His uncle was Sir John Gladstone (q.v.) and first cousin Liberal prime minister William Gladstone (q.v.).
