Pforzheim ist ein Stadtkreis und zugleich Verwaltungssitz des Enzkreises, von dem das Stadtgebiet fast vollständig umschlossen ist. Die Stadt ist ein Zentrum des Verdichtungsraums Karlsruhe /Pforzheim, der etwa 650.000 Einwohner zählt. Die Stadt ist ferner das Oberzentrum der Region Nordschwarzwald.

Pforzheim ist das Tor zum nördlichen Schwarzwald und wird aufgrund ihrer Schmuck- und Uhrenindustrie oft als „Goldstadt“ bezeichnet. Die Stadt stellt aber auch ein Freiluftmuseum für die Architektur der 1950er bis 70er Jahre dar.
