Career. Royal Navy. In 1771, at age 13, Vancouver entered the Royal Navy as a "young gentleman", a future candidate for midshipman. [2] . He was nominally an able seaman (AB) but, in reality, sailed as one of the midshipmen [3] aboard HMS Resolution, on James Cook 's second voyage (1772–1775) searching for Terra Australis.
