The name "dinar" is derived from the Roman denarius, used in the Africa province, the ancient territory of Carthage, modern day Tunisia. History. The dinar was introduced in 1960, having been established as a unit of account in 1958. It replaced the franc at a rate of 1000 francs = 1 dinar.
Le dinar tunisien (arabe : دينار تونسي ; symbole monétaire : DT ; code ISO : TND) est la monnaie de la Tunisie depuis le 1 er novembre 1958, à la suite de la promulgation de la loi n o 58-109 du 18 octobre 1958. À partir de cette date, il remplace le franc tunisien au taux de 1 dinar pour 1 000 francs.

History. Tunisia gained independence in 1956. The Central Bank of Tunisia was formed two years later in 1958. In December 1958 the newly created Tunisian dinar was disconnected from the French franc. The bank maintains a Money Museum which includes a collection of recovered Carthaginian coins .
