Differentemente dall'inglese moderno, l'inglese antico è una lingua sintetica ed è, in generale, pronunciato come scritto. Mantiene quattro casi del protoindoeuropeo: nominativo, genitivo, dativo, accusativo, e sopravvivono tracce di altri due casi: vocativo e strumentale.
