Following the proclamation of the change in form of government from constitutional monarchy (βασιλευομένη δημοκρατία, literally crowned republic) to republic (αβασίλευτη δημοκρατία, literally uncrowned republic), a referendum was held proclaimed for 13 April 1924.

In March 1924, the Greek Parliament adopted a resolution “on the abolition of Dynasty and the proclamation of the Republic,” which was submitted by the Alexandros Papanastasiou government. The resolution of the Parliament was put to a referendum, held on April 13. “Yes” garnered 69.78% of the valid votes and “No” 30.02%.
A referendum on retaining the republic was held in Greece on 8 December 1974. After the collapse of the military junta that ruled the country since 1967, the issue of the form of government remained unsolved. The Junta had already staged a referendum held on 29 July 1973, which resulted in the establishment of the Republic.
