Ioannis Kapodístrias (en italien Giovanni Capodistria) est issu d'une famille noble vénitienne inscrite au Libro d'Oro des îles Ioniennes et originaire de Capo d'Istria, à l'époque sous domination vénitienne (actuellement en Slovénie ).
