She was the youngest granddaughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Unlike other members of the Battenberg family, who were accorded the lower rank of Serene Highness, Victoria Eugenie was born with the rank of Highness due to a Royal Warrant issued in 1886 by Queen Victoria.
Princess Victoria Eugenie was the only daughter of Prince Henry of Battenburg and Princess Beatrice, and grand-daughter of Queen Victoria. Her father died of fever while serving in South Africa in 1896. She married King Alfonso XIII of Spain in 1906.
