Jahrhunderts die Universität Helmstedt zu einer reinen Provinz-Universität für die studierende Einwohnerschaft des Herzogtums Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel. Daran änderte auch ein kurzes Ansteigen der Immatrikulationszahlen im Zuge des Siebenjährigen Krieges nichts. Im Jahre 1795 studierten nur noch 97 junge Männer in Helmstedt.
