Ælfgar (died c. 1062) was the son of Leofric, Earl of Mercia, by his famous wife Godgifu (Lady Godiva). He succeeded to his father's title and responsibilities on the latter's death in 1057. He gained the additional title of Earl of East Anglia, but also was exiled for a time.

Of a like mind with the formidable House of Godwin, Ælfgar was a powerful vassal who did not shy away from clashing with his liege, King Edward the Confessor of England (r. 1042-1066).
When Ælfgar Earl of Mercia was born in 1010, his father, Earl Leofric III Of Mercia, was 32 and his mother, Godiva or Godgifu, was 30. He had at least 3 sons and 1 daughter with Ælfgifu. He died in 1062, at the age of 52, and was buried in Coventry, Warwickshire, England.
