Since 1347 the Egyptian population, economy, and political system experienced significant destruction as a result of the Black Death pandemic whose waves continued to destroy Egypt up to the early 16th century.
The Fifteenth Dynasty was a foreign dynasty of ancient Egypt. It was founded by Salitis, a Hyksos from West Asia whose people had invaded the country and conquered Lower Egypt. The 15th, 16th, and 17th Dynasties of ancient Egypt are often combined under the group title, Second Intermediate Period.

During the 15th century, Egypt was ruled by the Circassian Mamluks, a powerful Islamic dynasty that succeeded the earlier Bahri Mamluks. The Circassian Mamluks were known for their military skill, administrative acumen, and patronage of the arts and sciences.
After the death of Sobeknefru, Egypt was ruled by a series of ephemeral kings for about 10-15 years. Ancient Egyptian sources regard these as the first kings of the Thirteenth Dynasty. After the initial dynastic chaos, a series of longer reigning, better attested kings ruled for about 50-80 years.
